October 2018 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE Awareness Month
Domestic violence is a repeated abusive and threatening behavior in any relationships that is used by one partner to gain or maintain power and control over another intimate partner. Domestic Violence can be physical, sexual, emotional, economic, spiritual or psychological.
Our client was desperate to bring her child back to Illinois to be with her family after making the mistake of leaving the state with her abusive significant other. The story is heart-wrenching. Imagine being abused, locked out of your motel room by your significant other, and forced to wait with your baby in a parking lot overnight waiting for him. The Highland Park-Highwood Legal Aid Clinic helped our client by securing a parentage order and connecting her with officials and partner organizations. #NoMoreDomesticViolence
The Highland Park Highwood Legal Aid Clinic was ready to help when a mother and her son came to us fearing for their lives. This was a classic case of a woman living in a ‘gilded cage’ and she needed urgent help. The Clinic worked with officials to get guns out of the home, connect her with a divorce attorney, and provide an order of protection for her and her son. Today, they are on the road to re-building a new life. #NoMoreDomesticViolence
When a woman came to the Highland Park Highwood Legal Aid Clinic asking for help with an unfair divorce settlement, we learned there was more to the story. Our client was abused by her former spouse and needed legal advice and medical attention. We were there to help with both. #NoMoreDomesticViolence
The Highland Park Highwood Legal Aid Clinic was there when a young mother was referred to us by the States’ Attorney’s Office. She came to us to escape an abusive relationship and feared for her children who were witness to the abuse. We spoke her native language, helped her gain confidence, and connected her with services and agencies that are helping her obtain the life she deserves. She is even on the path to becoming a U.S. Citizen. #NoMoreDomesticViolence

We use all available strategies in the legal system to PROTECT and EMPOWER Survivors.
- ordering the offender to stay away;
- securing financial support for the Survivor;
- establishing possession of the home;
- ensuring the right to care of children;
- revoking offender’s FOID card;
- protecting property and pets.
After making sure the Survivor is safe, we assist with all legal issues related to the long-term well-being of the Survivor, which include divorce, child custody, support, visitation, and other family law matters.
